Abstract Grasslands are important carbon sinks, but the underlying processes for their soil sequestration potential still not well understood, despite much attention given to this topic. In Europe, grasslands, especially semi-natural also promoting biodiversity. Moreover, recent global reports have highlighted importance of biodiversity in supporting climate actions. boreal and alpine regions Nordic countries, grasslands play an role milk meat production food security. Certain grassland features management practices may enhance potential. Semi-natural maintained by optimized livestock grazing vital aboveground show promise belowground It is essential assess multiple functions particularly facilitate optimization policy measures across areas. Climate policies should counteract each other, as some do today. This essay addresses calls more knowledge about grasslands. will enable these ecosystems align with mitigation, maintain biodiversity, satisfy need increased supply.
